According to lawyer Ben Riley of Cooley Godward LLP, even if you don't frequently get to trial (which these days, is true of many litigation lawyers), "your training in civil litigation has
given you most of the skills you need to succeed." This and other tips are contained in Riley's article "Trying (and Winning) the Big Case," which was written shortly after Riley participated in a victorious six-week jury trial in California.
Riley's article is broken down into these sections: Jury Selection, Organization, Technology and Demonstrative Evidence, Securities Damages Analysis, Burden of Proof, Experts, Teamwork, Client Information, and Trial Advocacy. Says Riley, "Like most of what we do, the keys to winning at trial are hard work, diligence, and strong organizational skills."
