The San Francisco Chronicle weighs in on jury selection today in an article titled "Is selecting a jury scientific? Yeah, right." Though the article by Stacy Finz is interesting, the strategies suggested in its text should probably be supplemented with other reading materials. For example, Finz writes that for one prosecutor, "beer is the key to success when picking a jury."
"I want to find 12 people who can have a beer together without discussing religion or politics," he said. And his final test while making his selections: "Can I have a beer with this person and not slit my wrists?"
Finz notes that prosecutors often reject anyone who reads Grisham or watches the X-files; one defense lawyer keeps these people because they are likely to distrust the government. For more ideas, read the entire article.
